THE NEIGHBORHOODS
Overview
This six-part documentary series takes viewers on an intimate journey through Detroit’s diverse neighborhoods,
exploring the unique histories, architecture, and cultural legacies that define each community. From the tree-
lined elegance of Indian Village to the waterfront charm of Jefferson-Chalmers and the strong community bonds
of East English Village, each episode reveals distinct enclaves shaped by historical preservation, urban renewal,
and the people who call them home. The series examines the cultural divide—both real and perceived—
between Detroit’s East and West sides, where the East Side carries a grittier, more working-class identity while
the West Side is seen as more suburban and cosmopolitan. Drawing on urbanist Richard Florida’s insights about
how neighborhood identity attracts creative talent and fosters economic growth, this series explores how these
distinctions shape Detroit’s social and cultural landscape. Discover the neighborhoods that make Detroit not just
a city, but a collection of communities with stories worth preserving.
