About Hastings Street

Hastings Street Films is a Detroit-based documentary studio that tells powerful, place-based stories that educate, inspire, and preserve cultural memory. From legendary institutions like Hudson’s to the untold histories of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, our films explore the people and places that define Detroit’s identity—and shape its future.

Why Hastings Street

Our name honors Hastings Street, the main artery of Detroit’s historic Black Bottom. Once home to over 300 Black-owned businesses, cultural venues, and family homes, Hastings Street was a vibrant hub of creativity, community, and entrepreneurship before it was destroyed by so-called “urban renewal.” We carry that legacy forward by illuminating the voices and landmarks that deserve to be remembered.

Our Mission

  • We produce high-quality documentary films rooted in Detroit’s history, architecture, and cultural heritage.
  • Through compelling storytelling, we aim to spark meaningful conversations, foster civic pride, and connect generations.
